While living in Beacon, NY Brand was finding himself through abstract painting. But one day he came upon a listing for a large bundle of T-shirts that were to be donated through Craigslist. For some reason, this listing sparked an idea to incorporate the shirts into his paintings. He put out an ad requesting donations of t-shirts for an art project. The response was overwhelming and soon Brand had more T-shirts than he could store so he began to use them.

Along with the request for the donation of shirts, Brand also specified in the listing that the owners give him a story behind the shirts to be used as a semi-fictional narrative within the paintings. Sometimes the story was not able to be offered so Brand created a narrative based on the imagery and words printed on the t-shirts.
