Sometimes a single line gets the job done. This was created in LA while Brand was living in Silver Lake just before moving into Rinzai Ji Zen Center. Heavy times. Brand developed a technique using charcoal powder and water to create subtle washes in the background, the spontaneous line drawn over it.
