The palest work in the studio. A bone and cream ground, worked smooth, with almost everything on it drawn rather than painted. Graphite runs across the whole surface in a fine continuous hand: birds, hands, a spiral, small figures, numbers. Nothing is pressed hard. Nothing is covered over. Where the other paintings bury what came before, this one keeps it.
The phrase inside the eye never sleeps is written in blue near the upper left, and the number 528 appears twice. That is the title working. The marks we keep are the ones that were never painted out. At a distance the canvas reads as quiet. Up close it is the most crowded surface I have made. Wide, light, and low contrast. It brightens a room instead of anchoring it, and it rewards a wall people walk past closely.
