Gold on gold, and nothing else. The whole canvas is one color laid on thick and worked with the brush until the surface becomes the subject. Curved strokes loop and cross, catching light along every ridge. No script, no drawn marks, no second color anywhere. What the painting does, it does entirely through texture.
The light changes it. Morning reads warm and flat. Late afternoon finds every ridge and the whole surface turns. It is a different painting at different hours of the same day. Struck gold is what you say when you were digging for something else. This one was made by following the hand and stopping when the surface was right.
Wide and luminous at four feet. It warms a room without adding a color to it, which makes it unusually easy to place: over a mantel, a console, a bed, or anywhere the light moves across a wall during the day.
