Acrylic, oil pastel, and graphite on canvas
Not two is the Zen answer to a question about duality. Not one either. The thing and its opposite turn out to be the same thing, seen from different sides.
The canvas holds both halves without reconciling them. Cool grey and white on the left, worked soft and open. Warm ochre and plum on the right, blocked and edged. Between them a black ring, drawn in one pass with the brush, not closed. Script appears near the center in blue, half readable.
The circle is the argument. One stroke, no correction, and the gap left in on purpose. A closed circle would have settled the question. This one keeps it open.
Square, large, and quiet. Warm and cool in equal measure, which makes it unusually easy to place. It works in rooms that would reject a painting committed to one temperature.
